Your Morning Routine.
Dear Asher,
I am really proud of you.
At fifteen years old, you have an amazing morning routine.
On school days, you wake up at 6:30 a.m. I love how you choose different alarm sounds based on your mood or the season. It’s such a unique little rhythm you’ve created.
After waking up, you read your Bible. I wonder how many books and chapters you’ve read by now because you’ve been faithfully reading Scripture in the morning for a long time. Then, you take some time in prayer, silence, and solitude.
After reading Practicing the Way by our friend John Mark, you added that practice to your morning rhythm. I am really proud of you for that!
After your time with Jesus, you work out. Coach Kyle is your favorite right now, followed by Greg (I think). We’ve been having so much fun doing Apple Fitness together as a family. #Dice #Jonelle!
On non-school days, you do the same routine, just a little later, usually around 9:00. You’re not a “typical teenager.” I often wonder why you don’t sleep past 9:00, even on days when you can. I guess it’s just how your body is wired.
But Asher, I’m so proud of you because this morning routine will serve you well throughout your life. Your routine will change. That’s okay. Whether or not you go to college, whether or not you get married or have kids, whatever kind of job you get, know that your mornings will shift.
But keeping a routine in some form is important.
Let me get a little nerdy on you!
A good morning routine enhances productivity. It helps activate the brain’s prefrontal cortex, which is your decision-making center. Reading Scripture, exercising, journaling, and praying are powerful ways to start the day.
Your routine also helps to reduce stress and anxiety because a structured morning reduces chaos, creates calm, and helps your mind manage all the feelings that come with the day.
Waking up at a consistent time, whether 6:30 or 9:00, regulates your circadian rhythm, improves sleep quality, and benefits your overall health.
So keep that up, Buddy.
Keep your morning routine throughout your life.
So many of your peers don’t have one. In fact, a lack of morning structure is one reason so many in your generation, Gen Z, report being in a near-constant state of worry. 62% say they struggle with persistent anxiety, which structured routines can help ease.
Many young people also don’t plan their days in advance. I’ve read that 68% of young adults are unlikely to map out a schedule, leading to disorganized mornings and stress-filled days.
You’ve already built something strong, Buddy, so keep it up! You’re off to a great start, and your morning routine will be key in helping you grow into an amazing adult.
Here are a few things to remember:
Have a consistent wake-up time.
Pray, read Scripture, and give the first moments of your day to Jesus.
Drink water as soon as you wake up—it jumpstarts your digestion.
MAKE YOUR BED! It’s a bigger deal than you think. Click here to see why.
Exercise. I hope Coach Kyle sticks around for a long time!
Eat a good breakfast. Yes, cold pizza counts!
Plan your day. Review your tasks and set goals for what’s ahead.
I’m proud of you, Asher.
You’re starting your days with practices that will serve you well for years to come.
Keep going.
